NAAJA’s legal practice is the largest in the Northern Territory, providing high quality, culturally proficient and accessible advice, casework and court advocacy in both criminal and civil law. NAAJA’s civil law practice is an extremely busy and diverse one, with practice areas including police accountability, child protection, adult guardianship, consumer, discrimination, tenancy, social security and victims of crime assistance claims.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Administrative Assistant reports to the Practice Manager in Darwin, as well as the Managing Lawyer and Deputy Managing Lawyer.

DUTIES

  • Provide high quality administrative and secretarial support to the managing civil solicitor, Deputy Managing Lawyer including but not limited to preparing correspondence, taking calls, managing calendars, data entry and archiving.
  • Assist in answering Civil Law Section enquiries, take messages and where necessary, assist with appointments/ drop ins and referrals.
  • Providing general administrative support to solicitors as directed by the Practice Manager.
  • Prepare legal correspondence as directed by solicitors.
  • Provide accurate statistics, information and reports on NAAJA’s civil law practice to meet internal and external requirements.
  • Assisting with reception relief and other general office duties.
  • Maintaining client confidentiality, undertaking conflict checks and ensuring that client records are maintained according to legal practice standards including accurately using our electronic file management system (M Files).
  • Registering and distributing incoming mail/documents for the Civil Law Section.
  • Requesting criminal files where there is an authority signed, make copy for civil file and return to Crime.
  • Any other duties as required.
